| Joe and Jane have a very busy life style, having between them four grown up children. Alistair is a keen horsemen and rides most weekends in the Northern area point to points. Jane trains the point to pointers we have great fun during the Point to point season which runs from January till the end of May. Philip works on the farm along side Joe. Trish works for Soil Fertility Dunns and lives in Otterburn. Catherine works at The Otterburn Tower Hotel in Otterburn. Joe runs the 960-hectare stock farm consisting of about 200 suckler cows, which run with the Limosin bulls and a Belgian Blue bull. We have about 1500 Ewes mainly Blackies and a few Mules, We breed Black Faced Tups, which we sell at Lanark auction mart and Hexham Auction mart. The horses all go out to grass from the end of May to have there holidays this is the main season for Jane’s B & B which she enjoys meeting past guests returning and new faces. We start Lambing in the sheds on the 1st April till about the second week in May when the hill ewes finish. Spring calving will begin about 1st May, so these weeks are very busy, cattle go out from there winter housing in May and come back in October depending on the weather. Silage making and Hay making last two weeks of June first two weeks of July, August Harvest time down on the farm at Ogle which Joe farms in partnership with his brother David, The crops go back in September. Autumn calving August & September. The sheep work seems to be all year round, Clipping, dosing, tup time, scanning and lambing. We all work hard but most of all enjoy what we are doing in a fantastic scenic part of the world, Dunns Houses, Troughend, Otterburn, Northumberland. |
